1 course → $200,000/year business

Published about 1 year ago • 2 min read

Pre-P.S.: Spoiler alert! The course I'm talking about no longer exists. There's no hidden sales pitch here, just a fun story about trusting your gut and taking a chance by investing in yourself :).

Good morning Reader,

It was late 2011, and young Sarah was getting settled into her new shared office with marketing people who were way more stylish than she was.

She'd just been hired as a writer. A real writer, folks!

.... And she had no idea what she was doing.

So, like any good Millennial, she started to Google. And click.

And read.

And learn.

And that lead her to Ash Ambirge, resident bada$$ of the Internet and the now-defunct Brandgasm copywriting course.

Within moments, Sarah purchased the course and devoured the lessons.

And just like that, *snap* every copy project and blog assignment and client kick-off meeting afterwards got easier and easier.

She took these lessons with her for the next 6 months of that job...

And then into her freelance business...

Right up until almost exactly 10 years later when she hit the unbelievable goal of earning more than $200,000 in one year as a freelance writer.

And here's where scanty sapling Sarah's lesson hits home for you, because I want to ask you a question...

What are you doing this year that will lead you where you want to go 5-10 years from now?

Success in B2B writing is a long game.

It's a process of refining the natural talent already inside you into something helpful, effective, and valuable on the outside.

And it's those little seeds you plant, people you meet, and courses you take that will snowball over the next few years to take you where you want to go.

And it starts with people and programs that are active today, in 2023-time, that will have the most impact.

Because yes, we could all sit in a library and read philosophy and psychology textbooks and learn some fine things.

But there's simply nothing like learning from someone who's doing it now, so that you can do it now, too.

One person, one course, one investment can change everything for you, and put you the path to being a successful B2B writer.

So, your homework today?

Go find some inspirational folks who love to teach.

Click around LinkedIn and your Google search results and see who's message resonates with you most. Find a small number of groups (2-3 tops!) and spend your time there, and see what happens.

For me, honorable mentions for other courses and teachers I learned from early on include...

  • All of Ed Gandia's work (including his great free podcast)
  • Alexis Grant's now-defunct product, How to Create a Freakin’ Fabulous Social Media Strategy
  • Linda Formichelli's J-School
  • Brennan Dunn's Double Your Freelance Income email list

But there's no telling what your list of teachers will look like.

So... get cracking! When you look back on 2023, I want you to be proud of all the things you've learned :).

Courses and schmorses,

Sarah G.

Hey Reader! Everyone croons about the benefits of ditching entry level work for bigger clients with bigger budgets. To the extent that we're standing around our (virtual) water coolers whispering... Where are they? Where do I find these... high-paying clients? Like they're bounding just on the edge of the fog... ( {You! Finally have I found you! Here is a million dollars. Will you grace my Asana with your presence?) Here's a flipparoo for you in this fine February afternoon: High-paying...
